How Do You Find Points In A Graph? This set of numbers (2, 3) is an example of an ordered pair. The first number refers to the value of x while the second number stands for the value of y. When ordered pairs are used to find points on the grid, they are called the coordinates of the point. In above example, the x coordinate is 2 while the y coordinate is 3. Together, they enable you to locate the point (2, 3) on the grid. What’s the point of all this? Well, ever wondered how ships describe exactly where they are in the vastness of the ocean? To be able to locate places, people have to draw a grid over the map and describe points with the help of x and y coordinates. Why don’t you give it a try? From the origin to the left, you’re moving across the negative values of the x axis, i.e., -1, -2, -3 and so on. If you go up from the origin, you are covering the positive values of the y axis. Going down from the origin, will take you to the negative values of the y axis.
